Cookies and storage
Thanet Market uses a handful of cookies, and every one of them is there to make the site work. We don’t use advertising cookies, and our visitor counting doesn’t use cookies at all. That’s why there’s no cookie banner: UK law only asks for consent for cookies and similar storage that aren’t strictly necessary or that you haven’t asked for, and we don’t set any.

Cookies
- Your session. Set when you sign in so we know it’s you on each page. It’s removed when you sign out, and lasts 30 days at most.
- Your location (
tm_loc). Only if you tap “Show distance from me”. It holds the approximate position your browser gives, is used only to sort ads and show distances, and lasts 30 days. Tap the button again to clear it. - Posting before you sign in (
tm_visitor). Only if you add photos to an ad before signing in. It ties those photos to this browser until you sign in and post the ad, and lasts a day. - Staff sign-in (
tm_admin). Only for our moderators, after they enter their authenticator code. It lasts 12 hours.
Stored in your browser
Some choices are kept in your browser’s own storage instead of a cookie. They never leave your device.
- Larger text: whether you’ve switched it on.
- Site notices: which announcements you’ve closed, so they stay closed.
- Saved ads for offline: copies of ads you’ve saved, so you can read them without signal.
- Messages waiting to send: if you write a message while offline, it waits here until you’re back online.
- An ad you’re writing before signing in: what you’ve typed so far, so it’s still there if you close the page. It’s cleared once the ad is posted.
- Shared photos: if you share photos to Thanet Market from another app, they’re held briefly until they’re added to your ad.
Counting visits without cookies
To see which pages people use and to catch errors before you report them, we use PostHog, hosted in the EU, in its cookieless mode. It stores nothing on your device: no cookies, no local storage. Visits are told apart by a one-way code PostHog makes from your connection and a key that changes every day, so it can’t recognise you from one day to the next or across other websites. We never send it your name, email, messages or exact location.
None of our cookies track you across other websites, and none are shared with advertisers. For how we handle the personal data behind them, see our privacy notice.
Clearing them
You can delete cookies and site data at any time in your browser settings. Look for “Clear browsing data” or “Cookies and site data” and choose thanet.market. Signing out clears your session cookie.
If you block cookies altogether the site will still show ads, but you won’t be able to sign in, post or send messages, because we can’t tell one visitor from another without a session cookie.
