Thanet Market.

Complaints and appeals

Thanet Market is run by a small local team. If something on the site is wrong, unsafe or unfair, tell us and we’ll deal with it. This page explains how to report content, what happens next, and how to appeal if a decision has gone against you.

Reporting content

Use Report this ad on any ad, the report option in a conversation, or the report form. You don’t need an account: in line with the Online Safety Act 2023 we accept reports from anyone, whether or not they use Thanet Market, including reports about content that affects you even if you’ve never signed up.

Tell us what’s wrong in a sentence or two and, if you can, leave an email address so we can let you know what we did.

What happens to a report

  1. Your report goes into a queue that a person checks. Safety reports (scams, threats, anything involving a child, illegal items) go to the top.
  2. We look at the ad, message or account, and at any history behind it. We may hide the content while we look.
  3. We take action if it’s needed: editing or removing an ad, holding or deleting a message, warning, suspending or banning an account, or passing details to Kent Police, Trading Standards or the National Crime Agency where the law requires it.
  4. If you left an email, we tell you the outcome. We don’t tell the other person who reported them.

Appealing a decision

If your ad was removed, your account was suspended, or a message you sent was held and you think we got it wrong, you can appeal. Use the report form and choose “A decision about my own ad or account”, or email hello@thanet.market. Tell us which ad or decision it was and why you think it should be reversed. A different person from the one who made the original decision looks at every appeal.

If we agree with you, we put the ad or message back and clear the mark from your account. If we don’t, we’ll explain why and whether there’s anything you can change to make it acceptable.

Complaints about how we run the site

You can also complain about how we’ve handled a report, how long something took, or anything else about how we keep the site safe. Email hello@thanet.market and we’ll reply within five working days. For complaints about your personal data, see the privacy notice.

How quickly we respond

  • Safety reports: within one working day.
  • Other reports: usually within two working days.
  • Appeals and complaints: within five working days.

Who is responsible

The site owner is accountable for how reports, appeals and complaints are handled on Thanet Market and for our duties under the Online Safety Act. You can reach them at hello@thanet.market.

Not happy with how we handled it?

If you’ve been through our process and still think we got it wrong, you can raise it with Ofcom, the UK regulator for online safety. For problems with a trader rather than the site, contact Citizens Advice, who can pass cases to Trading Standards. If you’ve lost money to a scam, contact your bank straight away and report it to Action Fraud.
